Embracing Change and Timelessness: Reflections on 2024 Through ‘Fueki Ryuko’

As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the Japanese concept of Fueki Ryuko (不易流行), a guiding principle famously associated with Matsuo Basho’s approach to haikai poetry. This phrase beautifully captures the harmony between fueki (timeless essence) and ryuko (ever-changing trends), reminding us that innovation and preservation can coexist.

Take Japanese architecture, for example. Traditional elements such as tatami rooms and tokonoma alcoves have become less common in modern homes. However, the spirit of ma (the beauty of space and intervals) continues to live on in open-plan living areas and designs that embrace natural light. Similarly, the philosophy behind kaiseki cuisine—the focus on bringing out the natural flavors of ingredients—remains a constant, even as chefs introduce modern presentations and fusion influences to this traditional dining style.

I believe the same principle applies to personal growth and business. Adapting to new technologies and trends is vital, but staying true to one’s core values and principles is what provides lasting strength. Together, these two forces create meaningful and enduring progress.

This year, through new challenges, I have come to appreciate the importance of embracing change. At the same time, I’ve reaffirmed that the foundation of my work—deep respect for Japanese culture—is the timeless core that keeps me grounded.

As we step into 2025, a year filled with new possibilities, I hope to carry the spirit of Fueki Ryuko forward, welcoming both innovation and tradition into my journey.

To everyone who has supported me throughout 2024, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Wishing you all a wonderful New Year filled with both stability and growth, and the courage to explore your own timeless essence.

A calligraphy called "Fueki Ryuko"

This piece of calligraphy, titled “Fueki Ryuko” (Timelessness and Change), was created using Zen Brush, a digital tool for simulating traditional Japanese ink painting. While the strokes emulate the tactile feel of ink on paper, the digital medium represents a modern approach to preserving and expressing traditional arts.

It reflects the very essence of “Fueki Ryuko”—balancing the unchanging spirit of Japanese calligraphy with the adaptability of new technologies. Just as the timeless principles of calligraphy remain intact, the medium evolves, allowing this art form to connect with contemporary audiences worldwide.

Through this piece, I hope to demonstrate how tradition and innovation can coexist in harmony, inspiring us to carry this spirit into the coming year.
