Preserving Cultural Traditions: More Than Just Maintaining Forms
What does it mean to preserve tradition? It is not merely about maintaining forms but about sustaining timeless values while breathing new life into them. Last week, I watched the IMAX version of "Swan Lake" performed by the Paris Opera Ballet, and I was deeply moved by the profound weight of preserving tradition in performing arts.

A Personal Journey Through Traditional Ballet
I have always loved ballet and spent much of my 20s and 30s going to theaters. I was especially a big fan of the Paris Opera Ballet. However, for over a decade, I have drifted away from the theater, and with the generational change among dancers, I regretfully admit that I am no longer familiar with the current performers.
How Traditional Arts Bridge Modern Sensibilities
With this background, I went to see Swan Lake. The story—with its princes, castles, and magical elements—initially felt somewhat disconnected from modern sensibilities. Yet, as soon as the performance began, that disconnect dissolved, and I was utterly captivated. This was not only because of the performers' technical and expressive brilliance but also due to the invisible pillar of preserving tradition that underpinned every aspect of the performance.
The Living Legacy of Cultural Heritage
The dancers I once admired and today's performers may belong to different generations, yet the style and dignity they embody remain steadfast. It was incredibly moving to see how the new generation of dancers carries forward these cultural traditions while striving for even greater heights. This speaks to the immeasurable effort and passion of not only the dancers but also the teachers, choreographers, and everyone involved in the company who work tirelessly to sustain such artistry.
The Miracle of Preserving Tradition in Modern Times
Preserving tradition is not about mere imitation. It is about adapting what has been nurtured over generations to new contexts while maintaining its core essence. This Swan Lake allowed me to witness what I can only describe as a miracle of preserving tradition in performing arts.
